March has been an exceptionally busy month--Terry and Lesley opened up the new warehouse and are running its operation.  Tammy and Diane plus our dedicated volunteers have kept things going at God's Hygiene Help Center.   Tammy recruited new volunteers for our Help Center who got quick on the job training.  We all had to learn how to order, shop and stock the shelves while serving our clients.   One Tuesday the cars were all lined up in the parking lot patiently waiting their turn to show their ID and fill out an order form.  
​We also regularly serve the clients receiving treatment next door at Phoenix Integrated Services and those residing in the  Medina Recovery apartments on Medina Avenue, as well as a few homeless all who walk to our Help Center.
Our Help Center located at 1402 Oakland Park has been serving between 31 and 66 clients each Tuesday and Thursday between 10:30am and 1:00pm.  That added up to 433 clients this month.  Each client receives a bag with 6 hygiene or cleaning items.  So thank you to our faithful donors for your support because we all know how prices have gone up!

Brenda Andracki had previously volunteered at Because School Matters.  We were so happy that she is able to help us every Thursday  recording incoming products and organizing stock.  She brings great ideas for keeping track of inventory.  Brenda and her husband Jim are active members at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on North Broadway.

It's always amazing how the community networks and communicates their needs.  Officer Alesia Zacher received an email  request to set up a Hygiene Closet for needed  dignity items at Hamilton STEM Academy, 2047 Hamilton Avenue, Columbus, OH 43211.  Since it   is located in the South Linden community of Officer Alesia's precinct, she went  for  founder Tammy Jewell.  The officer  met with their staff because she is familiar with them, surveyed the space to see what kind of storage space they had.
Because Tammy has so many responsibilities on her plate, several weeks passed.  When Diane Hendrickson, Communications Coordinator, heard about the request, she  called the school  to speak to the school nurse.  One of our new volunteers started counting out and packing 25 items each into a box:  toothbrush and toothpaste, boys' and girls' deodorant, bar of soap, pocket tissues and small hand sanitizer.  
Officer Patty Meyers came right over to GHHC to pick up the box and she and Officer Zacher delivered to the Hamilton STEM.  God's Hygiene then received this note:

Diane, thank you so much for connecting with our team this week to coordinate the drop-off of donations today! These donations go a long way for our students and we sincerely appreciate you thinking of our students and families.

When Kathryn Farrar heard from Tammy about the need for feminine hygiene at Linden McKinley STEM Academy, she stepped up to help.  Thank you to Kathryn and her granddaughters for shopping.  They bought 30 sets of feminine pads, 30 bars of lavender soap for the young ladies, 30 women's deodorants, 60 toothbrushes, 30 bars of soap for the young men, and 30 men's deodorants.  Kathryn delivered them to God's Hygiene and volunteers loaded them into Tammy's SUV named "Mercy".  GHHC also donated 60 toothpastes to these items.  
Kathryn has also offered to shop for and build all of our Clean Start Baskets!  Paul Sparks and Jan Roberts of Kindway/Embark along with all of us at God's Hygiene Help Center are so grateful for wonderful volunteers such as Kathryn and her granddaughters.  What a blessing to teach at a young age about paying it forward!

The Shepard School by ECS offers a FREE technology based educational program that serves 325 students in grades K-6. So as Communications Coordinator, Diane called the school and connected with their Administrative Assistant, LeMoyne Jackson.  When told we could donate a box of hygiene to the school, he replied, "That would be great, thank you for the box of supplies. We appreciate it and it will definitely be put to good use." 
​GHHC volunteers got busy counting out and packing a box with 25 toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, sample lotions and sample body wash.  Thank you to Officer Alesia and Officer Patty Meyer for picking up the box and delivering to the school. 

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  Colossians 3:17 

Windsor STEM Academy is located in South Linden at 1219 E. 12th Avenue, across the street from the Douglas Community Center.  Diane heard they also needed hygiene since a number of their students are homeless.  So Diane searched on the school website and connected with    Jayla Richardson their new  Family Ambassador.  She   came to our Help Center to meet Tammy and pick up their box of hygiene. Windsor also received bars of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and hand cream.  After the other boxes of hygiene had already been delivered to the schools, a volunteer saw  on the shelf sanitizing wipes and hand sanitizer gel which  had been donated to GHHC.  We knew the school would definitely benefit from these  added items.

Thank you to the generous members of UALC at Mill Run and Lytham Road who make in kind donations at the Exchange Center for God's Hygiene. The items most needed are small  laundry detergents, body wash, deodorant, toilet paper and paper towels.   We also appreciate receiving devotionals.  This month we received boxes of hygiene wipes, new socks, kids' gloves, some jackets, and blankets.  We usually are not able to accept used blankets, but this month we had clients who needed them.  
Another Sunday we were blessed with all the items placed in a Clean Start Basket:  laundry detergent, toilet cleaner, all purpose cleaner, paper towels, toilet paper, shampoo, body wash, and more.  Thank you!! 
We do not accept half full bottles of lotion or shampoo.

When Tammy greets our clients, she talks to them about their needs and if they need any resources.  She then discovers who needs further help to treat an addiction.  It is such a blessing that she can refer them right next door to Phoenix Integrated Health Services. Burt Dhira, CEO of Phoenix in Linden, is so grateful to receive new clients to help find recovery.  
This month Tammy was pleased to see again a woman she worked  with from 30 years ago.  They hugged and cried.   She was delighted to share her testimony with Angelique how she escaped that lifestyle through the mercy of Jesus Christ and constant invitations of Diane to attend church.  Her friend had been in 6 different rehab programs.  Finally the Phoenix is the first to really help her.  Burt is encouraging her to volunteer with GHHC and she is very excited about that.  GHHC volunteers will surround her with love and prayer as we do our other volunteers.

​Erin Arnett, Donor Relations Coordinator of Festa, emailed us:  Hi team! I have a family I am helping to assist through our work here at Festa. The school social worker reached out and connected us. The list of needs is high, but they mentioned that they do not have hygiene items or even bath towels. Could you assist this family with these items? It is a single mother with 7 dependents living with her. Ages 6-20. Boys and girls. Please let me know the best way to get the ball rolling and THANK you for all the love you pour into our community! Also, please note the family speaks Spanish (the older children are “okay” with English but not great.) Thank you!
Tammy and the volunteers thought yes we can help them.  So right before closing the Help Center, we sprung into action and packed a bag of basic hygiene and Diane picked up a basket of towels from Tammy.  We were able to deliver to the Festa office that afternoon so the family did not need to wait any longer for basic needs.

Charmaine Campbell is a Linden community member who is starting a new life and is working hard to provide a good home for her children.  
She moved into a nice home with the help of the City of Columbus.  She has received some help in setting up her home including beds for her children through the Upper Arlington Lutheran Church's "Bed Brigade."
One of our monthly donors asked if there was a special need as they were looking to help someone during the Christmas season.   We asked Charmaine if there was something that she could use.  She excitedly shared that she did not have a washer or dryer, so she had to go to the laundry mat with her 4 children.
Our donor was very excited to be able to help Charmaine.  Tammy and Terry went to Lowe's and found a great deal on a very nice washer and dryer.  We paid for them and for their delivery and installation.  On the day that they were delivered, we greeted Charmaine with a Clean Start Basket filled with hygiene and cleaning products and a big bag of new towels.
Charmaine was overjoyed!!!  She was praising God and giving thanks for this wonderful gift.  And Tammy was filled with joy as she has memories of her life in dirty clothes as they lived without a washer and dryer.  

GIVING DIGNITY AND HOPE THROUGH HYGIENE WITH THE COMPASSION OF JESUS!

Dodge Recreation Center will be a Hygiene Help Center to be set up in February.  We welcomed them to GHHC with 20 hygiene closet bags as an extra way for them to kick off opening the help center.  Welcome to Center Manager:  Nikki Van Dine.   Hilltop neighbors in need can visit  Dodge Community Center located at 667 Sullivant Ave. Columbus, OH 43215 during hours they are open Monday through Saturday to pick up a bag of hygiene every 30 days.

But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from You, and of Your own we have given You. 1 Chronicles 29:14

In 2018 an acquaintance  brought his friend named Johnny  to Tammy's door.  He wore dirty clothes, terrible teeth and was on crack.  Tammy invited them  in anyways.  Johnny said, "My life is over."  But Tammy encouraged him to go to Faith Mission.  She  gave him hygiene, a rosary, a copy of  Our Daily Bread and also shared her story.  "This is how I changed my life and you can do it too!"
January 2022 this same man drives up in a new white Cadillac.  Johnny is now a productive citizen with a job, attends church, has new teeth, volunteers,  and is no longer "high."  Tammy cried hearing how his life had turned around.  He didn't need to come back to see Tammy to share but he wanted to tell her how her testimony changed his life.  God took over from there.  
​One person can make a difference in someone else's life.

Virginia had been estranged from her family for 7 years because she was strung out on drugs.  She had never lived alone since she had "special needs."  Two years ago Tammy had met Virginia when she was getting food out of the Blessing Box. She shared how her "boyfriend" had been abusing her, got her addicted to drugs and spending all of her social security check for two years.  Tammy referred her to Choices and Virginia  turned her life around.  Her caseworker helped her obtain a good job and get her moved into her own apartment.  At last she was comfortable living alone on her own  God's Hygiene was so glad to help Virginia with hygiene and some other items.  God gave her a new toaster to enjoy in her new apartment.  Congratulations Virginia!

Thank you to this amazing young lady who shared about God's Hygiene Help Center with her 5th grade class.  She collected 10 Purses of Love stuffed full of hygiene and donated them to Tammy on Sunday.  One can never be too young (or old for that matter) to share our mission to provide hope and dignity to those in need with the compassion of Jesus.  Thank you!  ​

Scott Milliken moved into the home of his aunt, Diane Hendrickson, this month.  He has previously received hygiene and knew Tammy.  So Diane brought Scott along with her when she volunteered at God's Hygiene Help Center.  He even helped prepare the chicken and noodles to be served to the volunteers for lunch.  
​Lesley made Scott feel welcome by  putting him right to work helping to unload detergent and bleach from her vehicle into our temporary warehouse.   All the volunteers appreciated his being there and helping out wherever needed--greeting the clients and getting their ID's or helping to move products.
Tammy said, "We have been praying for a man to come volunteer.  We are so thankful for Scott.  He is such a big help.  When Diane is away to Florida, I will gladly pick him up to work at the Help Center."
Scott says, "It's good to give back to the loved ones who God has placed in my life.  God bless all of you women volunteers.  I can feel for you now that I see all that you do when volunteering.  Love, Scott"

Despite COVID impacting our world in a huge way, God's Hygiene Help Center hasn’t changed its mission of serving our neighbors in need.  More and more people are coming to us for personal hygiene and cleaning needs.  We offer that – and SO much more.  In fact, last week, our Oakland Park Help Center provided hygiene for 92 clients in a 3-hour period, a new record for one day.  And we continue to serve over 400 clients each month.  The needs are great, and we are here to help, thanks to generous supporters like you.
 
I wish you could have seen the joy and appreciation on the faces of the people we help.  Our volunteers provide compassion and care along with household cleaning, hygiene, and personal care products, as well as warm hats, gloves, and scarves (“Project Warm”), school supplies (“Because School Matters”), and Clean Start Baskets for people making a new start in life.  We serve clients where they live, and we offer them dignity and hope.

Tim and his beautiful wife Tara have been longtime supporters of God’s Hygiene Help Center.
Their love, prayers and donations helped GHHC grow from a small hygiene closet to a larger and expanding nonprofit which now helps several communities with hygiene help centers and hygiene closets in the Columbus area and is growing to serve the needs of hundreds more.  We will be opening 2 new hygiene help centers next year and creating hygiene closets, partnering with local churches and organizations, so we can reach more neighbors in need in our communities.  We were so blessed by and loved Tim and we will miss him greatly.

Dave Mann, Pastor for Internationals and Mission sent this message:  We have a significant opportunity before us with the arrival in central Ohio of hundreds of Afghan refugees.  They will come with virtual nothing.  So CRIS (Community Refugee and Immigration Services) is imploring churches to step up and form “Welcome Teams” of 5-10 people each to befriend soon-to-arrive Afghan families.  I am hoping that UALC can form several such teams.
Members of Upper Arlington Lutheran Church responded and have formed 4 teams of volunteers to assist families arriving in the Columbus area from Afghanistan.   GHHC staff were happy to pack 4 bags of hygiene and cleaning items which  Diane delivered  to the team leaders at  The Church on Lytham and The Church at Mill Run.

Tammy's sister lives at Whetstone Care Center.  A case manager shared with her about a dedicated employee who needed a little assistance.  So together several  other people helped provide:  a Christmas tree, $20 for ornaments, a food box, bag of hygiene from GHHC, and $100 for Christmas presents.  Thank you to the Bed Brigade she now has 4 beds with pillows.  sheets, blankets, and a Bible.  It usually takes 3-4 months to get a bed.  Tammy pleaded with Dale Cory that all the children were sleeping on the floor. Dale said,  "Oh, Tammy you really put me in a position.  I have to help you."
Tammy was also able to provide her with a lamp, dishes, and silverware.
Another woman named C. Campbell was also helped.  She moved from California to Columbus with her five children.  They did not have enough money to bring her furniture with her.  Tammy's friend Ann Glove, who  is a case worker for HIV/AIDS clients, told Tammy about her.  GHHC gave her 5 sets of hats, gloves, Christmas stockings and 5 bags of hygiene.  Then Dr. CeCe Harris got her a housing voucher, food,  shoes and coats for her children.
Using our resources, help of others and most importantly Christ, we were able to provide Christmas for these two families. 

Thank you to the generosity of employees of ODW Logistics who packed 450 Kits of Kindness filled with shampoo, body wash, and more.  GHHC staff got busy sorting them into large trash bags.  We distributed them to our Columbus Police Linden liaisons, Douglas Community Center, Far East Community Center, Dr. CeCe Harris  and Helping Hands Free Clinic.  Columbus Parks and Recreation is having a community giveaway on December 22 where these Kits of Kindness will be distributed along with food and Christmas gifts.  Manney Clark, Douglas Center Manager replied, "We have been giving out the hygiene items that you blessed us with.  We had a grab and go Christmas walk through.  We gave all of the participants hygiene with their presents.  Thank you so much from the South Linden community."

Thank you to our loyal supporters who donate hygiene items to us.  Always needed are Bibles, Christian and devotional books (not fiction).  During the winter months we continue Project Warm and appreciate receiving adult and children's hats, gloves, and scarves.  
A few years ago Tammy did a presentation at Linworth United Methodist Church and the ladies are still collecting and bringing donations: including gently used coats which were immediately given away. Julia Jewell brought cases of adult diapers which we were able to donate to an assisted living facility.  Baby diapers are provided by a partner organization.   Hygiene items most needed:  cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, bleach, toilet paper, and paper towels.  These donations may be left in the Exchange Center at either Mill Run or Lytham Road Churches.  If large donations, please deliver to GHHC Help Center Warehouse at 1402 Oakland Park Avenue (next to Donato's) on a Tuesday or Thursday between 10 am - 1 pm.

Elizabeth Adams, our Volunteer Coordinator, happened to share with her neighbor about serving with God's Hygiene.  This morning that neighbor delivered all of  these hygiene items including toothpaste, deodorant, all sizes of diapers and more donated by her small group!  Thank you for sharing the Christmas spirit with us!

We want to honor and give recognition to special people who have been an incredible blessing to GHHC.  There are two men who were honored at our Wall of Honor ceremony on November 16, 2021.  
Harley Bratton moved back home to Ohio from Largo, Florida in 2015 to Iive with his daughter Diane Hendrickson. Diane become a widow in 2014 and Harley's sweetheart of 32 years had passed away.   Tammy came to the house to visit Diane and play games.  When Harley  learned how she was serving her neighbors out of her home in the Linden  community and her story,  he became an avid supporter of Tammy.  Harley  was an integral part of the growth of GHHC in the early years.  Tammy says, "He was  God send to me and this ministry."  Harley became her mentor and advisor--shorten your story, shorten your thank you notes, keep the peoples' attention and lighten up.  When he read the Columbus Dispatch article that Columbus Parks and Recreation planned to build a new community center in the Linden area,  Harley said, Tammy  that is where GHHC needs to be.  Diane get on the computer and find out who to contact."  Terry and Diane made an appointment with Dr. CeCe Harris and that is how GHHC began having hygiene at the Douglas Community Center in south Linden.    
Tim Robison has been a supporter of Tammy and GHHC for many years with his wife Tara.  Tim and Tara became involved as board members in 2018.  In January 2020, as GHHC reorganized with a new business model and new board, Tim agreed to be our Board Chairman.  He was dedicated to serving and supporting GHHC and worked diligently with Terry, the Executive Director, to establish and grow our organization.  Tim retired as the Board Chairman due to health issues in February 2021.  He and Tara continue to love, support and encourage Tammy and our staff.
We look forward to adding more honorees in the future as special people make a difference in our organization.

Thank you to all of you who regularly collect and donate hotel or sample sizes of hygiene items.  Each month Sue and Dick Zerman come to the Help Center to pick up 50 Blessing Bags.  They hand deliver these bags along with sandwiches to the homeless living under the bridges in The Bottoms on the west side of Columbus.  Included in these bags are shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, deodorant and razor.  Because of Project Warm, this month we were able to also give them 2 dozen hats, gloves and socks.
We have a request as we enter the winter season, we need unused travel size items.  Also please consider donating tubes of chapstick and lip balm which is frequently requested by our clients.  Thanks to the great job  Bonnie Johnston has done organizing our books, we are also giving out Christian books and Bibles.  We will gladly accept any of your Christian books you have already read.  Please no fiction books.    Thank you.

NBBA Street Ministries www.facebook.com/Notbybreadalonestreetministries <nbba2020@outlook.com> recently messaged us about their Outreach Event on Saturday, November 13 at Jericho’s Light Club.  For the last four years NBBA Street Ministries has done Warm The Hearts to provide hats, mittens and scarves as well as personal hygiene products for the homeless and less fortunate on the West Side of Columbus.  This year they did this at their monthly night we volunteer at Jericho’s.  They requested they   could use any donations we may have towards this.  If you need personal references Royal and or Monica at Jericho’s will happily give my husband Steve Herrada and myself a reference if you need it. Helping Appalachian Rural People (H.A.R.P.) located in Caldwell, Ohio, is another mission for Upper Arlington Lutheran Church (UALC) HARP helps the local folks in Southeast Ohio and one of their projects is to give out Christmas Stocking to children 12 years old and younger. Each stocking contains a hat, a pair of gloves, Christmas pencils, as well as several toys and small books.  Filling the stockings is always a fun project for a variety of volunteers.  Becky Harrass of UALC has organized this project for a number of years and starts shopping for bargains right after Christmas each year.  Diane joined Becky's family and friends helped with the packing on Sunday, November 7.  Thank you Becky for donating extra items such as women's, men's  and kids' socks and girls' hand cream to God's Hygiene to bless our clients this holiday season.  We are blessed to partner together.

One of our volunteers Elizabeth visited St. Brenden's Craft Show.  She came across the booth for Kindware.  Kindware is a collection of hand-crafted one-of-a-kind pieces made by the incarcerated men and women at The Ohio Reformatory for Women at Marysville, Ohio and the Marion Correctional Institution at Marion, Ohio. Proceeds from donations of these items provide resources to support our men and women of Kindway’s Embark Program on their journey from incarceration to independence. Watch short video how this jewelry is created.
​Elizabeth started to admire the beautifully created pieces and selected ornaments and jewelry.  Tina, the woman managing the booth, asked her if she knew about Kindway.  Elizabeth replied, "Yes, I volunteer with God's Hygiene Help Center and we pack  Clean Start Basket for newly released women and men through Kindway/Embark."    Tina shared, "I received a basket and it really had blessed me."  Hearing this really made Elizabeth's week knowing she was serving with such a worthwhile organization as God's Hygiene Help Center.

On Sunday morning I woke up excited.  Jesus told me, "Come on.  You have a new sweater to wear to church."  That wasn't the reason at all that I was woken.  But I was tired and didn't want to get up.  But Jesus knows me, "Get up!  You have a new sweater."  So I got up started to get dressed but not wearing the new sweater.  The Holy Spirit nudged me about the lady named Lisa in the Flower Department at Krogers North Broadway.  She needs a coat, hat and gloves.  So I listened but I didn't want to embarrass her since she had not asked me for the coat.  So I put the heavy coat into "Mercy" and drove to Krogers.  I walked into the store and talked to Lisa.   "Oh yes!  I really could use a heavy coat.  I have to work outside with the flowers and have nothing."
Tammy walked back to her car to retrieve the heavy coat to give to her.  Lisa was freezing so Tammy also ordered her a Starbucks coffee.  The Starbucks associate asked if Tammy was on her way to church.  "Oh yes!"  She started to cry and said,  "I want to go to church, too but I have sinned too much.   I feel dirty and unworthy because I have sinned so much.  I have already been baptized but have to work every Sunday."
Tammy hugged her and said, "Your Father is waiting on you.  He loves you.  Come home.  Come to church."  
Out of no where, an UALC member called and asked "Could you use 5 new coats?"  Tammy replied, "Oh my yes, the need is so huge."  So Tammy  was so glad that again she had listened to the Holy Spirit.  She planned to deliver one of those coats and a Bible the next week to the Starbucks lady at Krogers.

We feel so blessed that several people have contacted Terry Starr, our Executive Director, about wanting to volunteer.  They will start after the holidays in January 2022.  If you ask any of our current volunteers, we have so much fun serving.  There are a variety of tasks you may choose:  greeting the clients, checking client into the database system, filling the client's order, restocking shelves, entering client into database, picking up inventory, handing out hats, gloves, scarves, or socks, offering prayer or resource sheets.

"Long time, no see!  Wow!  It's great to see you.  What brings you here to see us?"
Burt Dhira came to God's Hygiene Help Center shortly after we opened our new hygiene help center on Oakland Park Avenue in August 2020.  I had known Burt from his younger years as he had been friends with my daughter throughout elementary, middle, and high school.  
Burt shared his story:  He is the President and CEO of Phoenix Integrated Health, an organization that helps people who are recovering from addiction or mental health issues.  He was driving one day in early August and he saw a police officer stopped on the side of the road.  He immediately thought: "I need to stop and talk to her."  He tried to dismiss the thought as he had a van full of furniture and stuff that he was taking to one of his recovery houses.  But the message persisted:  "Stop and talk to her."  So he did.
That police officer was Officer Alesia Zacher who is the liaison for the North Linden community and a partner with GHHC.  She talked to Burt as he shared what his organization did.  She told him about our organization and that we were opening a hygiene help center on Oakland Park Avenue.  She gave him Tammy's card.  He called Tammy and asked if he could come over to talk about becoming partners for helping and serving his recovery clients.  
We met and discussed becoming partners for supporting his clients.  Our mission: "Providing dignity and hope through hygiene with the compassion of Jesus" worked well with his mission.  We developed a partnership which has grown and developed over the past year.  We are excited to have Phoenix Integrated Health as our new neighbor on Oakland Park Avenue.  Together we can help and serve our neighbors in need!  
All because God spoke to Burt..... and he listened.  We thank you that he did.
God's Hygiene is so happy to  welcome our new neighbor.  Phoenix Integrated Health Services moved into the Health Center next door  on  October 21.  GHHC has been partnering with Phoenix by providing hygiene to clients served by their caseworkers.  Now we can refer any of our clients needing their assistance.

First I would like to say Keep up The God work. I was truly amazed at the event hearing all the good you’ve done and what you are continuing to do.
I was introduced to you through Manney Clarke; instantly I was greeted with a smile and a genuine sweet Spirit, I believe I spoke to you young ladies for approximately 5 minutes before you looked at me and said “how would you like some book bags to give away to the people in your community?” I was given 100 bags  filled with supplies, i had witnessed authentic generosity and for that I thank you.
We had a book bag giveaway on August 15, 2021 here at the William H Adams Community Center.  The highlight was a kid jumping out the car yelling “ look mom book bags” 15 minutes later that same youngin ran up to me and said “ look Mr. Gp I got me a new book bag and I’m ready for school” actually he had two so I asked him “ why do you have two book bags”; he replied “ I have one for my sister.” The look on that youngsters face brought tears to my eyes. I am here to thank you for making that young man happy, what you are doing is truly making a difference.

On Sunday, September 26 Upper Arlington Lutheran Church held a congregational meeting with complimentary lunch.  There were about 40-50  ham and turkey sandwiches and potato chips left over.  What to do with them? Nichole Bellair, UALC new special events coordinator, asked if perhaps God's Hygiene Help Center could use them.   Cheryl Hall tried calling Tammy Jewell but could not reach her.  So Cheryl called Diane Hendrickson next who was returning on a bus trip to Lake George, New York.  Diane said yes, she would ask Tammy and contacted Officer Alesia Zacher.  Officer Zacher said Yes! she knew people in the Linden community who would so appreciate having a sandwich.  
Monday morning Diane and Officer Alesia drove to UALC to pick up the sandwiches and chips.  Then began a new "educational experience" for Diane  as a ride along with a police officer checking on people in the South Linden community.  We first saw Don, a homeless panhandler at the corner of 11th Ave. and I-71.  Officer called him over and offered him a sandwich and chips but also told him, "Get off my corner.  This is Linden.  I have spent years cleaning up the corner."  
We next drove past the NNEMAP Food Pantry which Diane had posted on God's Hygiene Facebook page.  We offered those workers a sandwich.  Then we drove through alleys along the railroad tracks where the homeless live and hang out.  Officer said, It was too early.  So we drove to where the homeless are served and a number of men walked up to get a sandwich.  The Officer shared that a number of people may be hesitant to take food from a police officer, but will accept the handout from a lady from Upper Arlington Lutheran Church.  Diane always asked if she could take a photo.  If the person declined, it may be because he has an outstanding warrant.  
We drove to see Miss Lola, 94 years old and lives alone.  But her neighbor came out and said they took her to the hospital.  We stopped anyone walking on the street or sitting on their porch.  "How are you doing?  Would you like a free ham sandwich and some chips.  This lady from Upper Arlington Lutheran Church is giving them out."  Officer Alesia believes in supporting the working people so men remodeling a house and City of Columbus workers enjoyed sandwiches.  
We talked to a wonderful caring landlord in the bright yellow shirt.  He knew UALC and was there on Reformation Sunday when our church left the Evangelical Lutherans and started North American Lutheran organization.  We drove to Maloney Park behind St. Stephens' Community Center where a dozen cars were parked in the shade and offered sandwiches to  three men.  A man sitting outside the gas station store obviously had uncomfortable shoes.  Officer Alesia asked him, "What size do you wear?  12's.  I'll go get a pair and be back."  Meanwhile Diane is asking about what the Dispatcher is reporting.  A man on Cleveland Avenue and 24th wearing a white T-shirt and blue pants.  He had stolen a car!  Since Diane was riding in the car, Officer Zacher could not go help the other officer wanting to go after him.
Our final stop was driving back to Police Substation 5 at the corner of Cleveland and 11th Avenues to get a pair of size 12 shoes.  You should have seen the look on his face that we actually returned!

It was such a pleasure to finally meet you.  I enjoy speaking with mother and knowing she is okay.  I know it gives her comfort to know I look out for her but I also enjoy listening to her speak and tell me stories, her laugh is contagious!   I know with certainty she is well taken care of by her son, just as I did with my mother, but sometimes it’s nice to know there is someone else out there  looking out for her.  
I am not allowed to recommend any organizations, however, the items that I sometimes bring her come from a program getting strong in Columbus called Godshygiene.org.  Tammy Jewell, the founder is a human trafficking survivor who beat the odds.  I met her years ago at a Linden event and recognized right away what a caring and community driven person and her goal is to help others and she can honestly relate to people who have been struggling on the streets.  I, as a police officer, sometimes need immediate help for the citizens I come across.  I have called her at 10pm at night and 10am in the morning and she pulls things she has stored in her home on Howey Rd and given me everything from blankets to Lasagna.
Please do not feel obligated to do anything at all, I will continue to check on her regardless, her spirit is wonderful.

Wow!  We are beyond grateful for your love and support in helping to make “Because School Matters 2021” a HUGE success! We served hundreds of students and families with backpacks, school supplies, hygiene bags, shoes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, pizza and Cheryl’s Cookies. So many smiling faces, grateful hearts and shouts of “Thank you” and “God bless you!”
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the 45 volunteers  serving with love with us!  134 parents registered.  Gave out all 250 backpacks and needed more. Over 300 pairs of shoes were given away.   60 pizzas were donated and eaten!  Over a dozen police officers attended including the K-9 dog and therapy dog.  #16 Fire Engine with firefighters attended.
Thanks to a Thrivent Action Team project, Diane was able to order a banner for our Because School Matters project which we can hang up each year.  We also were able to order Bible scripture bookmarks to hand out at our Prayer and Resource Table.  Thank you Thrivent!  We could not have done it without you!

Also, later in the day last Saturday, I met two students who were here at the branch that had been at Huy Elementary for the backpack giveaway. 14,000 pairs of shoes were anonymously donated to God's Hygiene Help Center.  That is a lot of shoes to be given away at just one event.  So Tammy Jewell, her friend Crystal Anderson, and Diane Hendrickson decided to give away pairs of shoes on Tuesday, August 3 at National Night Out.  We had planned to attend the event at the new Linden Community Center.  Instead God told Tammy there was a greater need at the Milo Grogan Community Center.  The highlight of Tammy's evening was meeting our. new City of Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant.  Chief Elaine of course fell in love with our founder and our GHHC mission to provide hope and dignity through hygiene to those in need with the compassion of Jesus.  She then  offered to take a selfie with Tammy.   Welcome Chief Elaine Bryant to Columbus and as head of our wonderful police force!

More shoes were donated to VFW Post 4044.  Our veterans and members truly appreciate God's Hygiene sharing with them.  
Then even more shoes were picked up to be given away.  Dr. CeCe Harris came to get boxes and boxes of shoes for the Far East Community Center giveaway on Saturday, August 21.  Our South Linden Police Liaison Alesia Zacher picked up a police car full of shoes for the Police Substation at 11th and Cleveland Avenue.  Police officers always meet neighbors in need of shoes.  So glad we can help pass them on to those in need.  It takes more than a village to give away 1400 pairs of shoes!  Thank you to our anonymous donor!

tGHHC is blessed to partner with Columbus Recreation and Parks.  Hygiene is available for the Center Managers to distribute each month to their clients at the following Community Centers:   Douglas in South Linden, Far East next to Walnut Ridge High School, and Barack in South Columbus.  We plan to also put a HelpUu  Center in the William H. Adams Center near East Elementary as soon as we get additional funding.  Because of the generosity of UALC donating backpacks and of various donors of school supplies, we were able to partner with the Community Centers to provide backpacks for their students.  So instead of one, there will be four giveaways of GHHC backpacks:  Saturday, August 14 at Huy Elementary parking lot hosted by GHHC; Sunday, August 15 at William H. Adams Center; Saturday, August 21 at the Far East Center and in September at the Douglas Center.  The Center Managers and their communities are so appreciative.

A wonderful group of young ladies from one American Heritage Girls group led by our friend Karen Schneiderhas been helping to collect and donate hygiene, personal care and cleaning products for GHHC.  They donated a Clean Start Basket, school supplies and held a "Hygiene Collection" drive by giving out flyers and bags to their neighbors.  They collected the hygiene donations and brought them to us to be given out at our hygiene help centers.  THANK YOU for your heart to serve and help our neighbors in need! ​

At 8:45 am on Sunday, August 15, South Linden Liaison Officer Alesia Zacher, called Tammy for help.  Other officers had seen panhandlers on the street corner and they wanted to get a young mother and her baby help and off the streets.  The baby had a terrible rash because of dirty diapers.
She was begging on the corner for money to buy diapers and crying about  wanting to kill herself.  Officer Zacher knew where to find that help--God's Hygiene Help Center.  So Tammy went to the Help Center and packed up needed  dignity items.  Diapers, hygiene, cleaning items and shoes were then delivered by Officer Zacher to the young mother.  

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.  Zephaniah 3:17

Congratulations to Andrea Yantone!  We are so happy and proud of Andrea in her new life!  Andrea has been a regular volunteer at God's Hygiene this past year helping stock inventory, greet and fill client orders.  Our GHHC staff is excited  that she will also share what a difference God's Hygiene has made in her life at our upcoming Divine Dignity fundraiser in September.  ​

On September 16, God’s Hygiene Help Center will host our first-ever fundraising event.  “Divine Dignity” is our goal:  to provide hope and dignity to our neighbors in need.
We are now serving hundreds of people every month.  Our hygiene help centers are located in  3 Columbus community centers and we have an enormous opportunity to grow and expand into the many additional communities in need.  We are partnering with churches and organizations across Columbus, including Helping Hands, Lower Lights Christian Health Center, Phoenix Integrated Health Services, and the Kindway re-entry organization.
We are asking you to prayerfully consider attending for our inaugural fundraiser.  Each table seats 8 people so we are hopeful that you will invite people to sit with you who would have a heart to support the mission of God's Hygiene Help Center.   Guests are welcome free of charge due to our wonderful event and table sponsors.  Please keep in mind that this is a fundraiser so inviting people with a heart to support our mission and vision is key.

Officer Alesia Zacher wanted the new North Linden liaison to know about God's Hygiene Help Center.  We were so happy to meet Officer Lisa Barbeau this month.  Officer Alesia knew her mother when she was an officer!  Officer Lisa will also be working at Because School Matters.  
I’ve been a Columbus Police officer for 23 years.  I was a patrol officer on the northeast side of Columbus for 10 years.  I’ve spent time in our Accident Investigation Unit and worked at our central Headquarters downtown.  My grandmother lived at 3015 Oaklawn St. and I grew up there.  My great grandmother lived on Howey Rd. for years.  I am very familiar with 2 precinct and look forward to working with you and others in the community.
My responsibly as the North Linden Liaison officer  is to educate the community on safety as it pertains to the crime issues in that area.  I will be  patrolling the precinct and attending block watch meetings.  I will be conducting presentations and demonstrations to  community groups, businesses and schools regarding safety.  Also getting involved in some of the FUN stuff like attending some of the community social events like block parties.   Officer Lisa Barbeau #2149

A huge THANK YOU to Upper Arlington Lutheran Church and all of our wonderful supporters for the amazing school supplies and monetary donations for our "Because School Matters" event on Saturday August 14.  We collected all of the school supplies needed for the backpacks.
The 460 backpacks are packed and ready to be given to the students in the North Linden, South Linden, and Far East communities.  These students and their families will be so excited to receive backpacks and school supplies.  We hope that they are excited about going back to school and that having school supplies will encourage them to do their best and stay in school.
And thank you to the wonderful people who have signed up to be volunteers for this event.  In keeping with recommendations from the City of Columbus and The Columbus Police, we have determined that it will be a DRIVE THROUGH ONLY event again this year.  Volunteer training will be held at Huy Road Park on Saturday, August 7 at 10:00 AM.

Our team of volunteers have been busy making the final plans for our 7th annual event--Because School Matters.  We feel so blessed because we now have about 60 volunteers, many are new ones from UALC.    All our volunteers will receive a complimentary "where love wins) T-shirt, GHHC lanyard, and name badge.   Columbus Recreation and Parks is now a co-sponsor since they are providing at no charge the city park, permission of the school to use their parking lots, and providing extra needed tables.  With a Thrivent Action Team project, we ordered Bible scripture bookmarks and a 12 foot Because School Matters banner.   Activities and organizations invited are:

I felt so much joy, and a sense of relief when I was greeted with your Clean Start Basket.  It brought a smile to my face and warmth in my heart to know that after spending 15 years in prison, someone cared enough to make sure I had hygiene.  Each and every item is perfect! and will be put to great use.
God bless you and whomever chose the things to put inside.  I cried as I pulled each item and out and thanked the Lord for providing for me.  I also thanked Him for you and your kind heart.  May God continue to bless you and your ministry.

Michelle, a grandmother wanting to help her son and her five grandchildren, came to God's Hygiene at the referral of Dale Cory.  Thomas had custody of four of his children ranging in age from 2  to 11 years old  through Franklin County Courts.  When the estranged mother passed unexpectedly, Children's Services and the Courts gave temporary custody of the youngest to the father.  So now he is a single of five, Thomas sets out to be the best father he can. But he knows without God and His helpers he can't make it alone.
Thank God for Dale Cory from the Bed Brigade heard of the situation and provided resources to the family--beds, blankets and Bibles, And from there the story continues to bring together a community to help a hurting family in need. God's Hygiene was able to provide needed hygiene to Michelle.  Since an anonymous donor had given us 1400 pairs of shoes--more than enough for our Because School Matters event, GHHC was able to give   new pairs shoes to  the whole family.  
Today we are here by God's grace had the privilege to serve our Lord and Savior by helping this family.  Michelle asks for continued prayer for Thomas and her grandchildren.  There are still many needs  this family has.

Tammy's nickname is "Rabbit" because she doesn't like to eat much meat and also because she is like an Energizer Bunny.  Although the Blessing Box next to her home is not an official project of GHHC, it still means a lot whenever she gets a simple thank you.

All of our supporters of God's Hygiene are a real blessing, too.  We are now serving up to 50 clients a day when the Help Center is open.  More caseworkers are registering to pick up needed hygiene items for their clients.  Linden residents walking by see our "Free Hygiene" sign and are so grateful to walk up and able to pick up 6 items.

Because School Matters 2021 is our 7th annual backpack and school supply giveaway which is held in the North and South Linden communities. WE NEED YOUR HELP!  We are collecting extra school supplies to put into the backpacks. We have a list of the supplies we are collecting listed above and on our godshygiene.org website. You can buy school supplies from the list and deliver them to us. Or shop on Amazon at the GHHC 2021 Because School Matters Wish List.  You can order any of the items listed and they will be delivered directly to us. Please join Amazon Smile and select Gods Hygiene Help Center (choose it as your nonprofit). School supplies are needed by SATURDAY, JULY 17, 2021.  
WE ALSO NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 14.  If you can help, please sign up on our website at "Because School Matters" and click on Volunteer.  There are many opportunities to serve with us.
The Because School Matters 2021 event is one focus project of God’s Hygiene Help Center whose mission is “providing dignity and hope through hygiene to those in need with the compassion of Jesus.” We offer Christian literature, pastoral care and prayer to all people who come to our event. We care about our neighbors and want them to know that someone cares. Won’t you join us in helping our neighbors feel loved and our students stay in school?

Thank you to the amazing team of volunteers who have been meeting to organize this 7th annual event:  Committee Chairpersons Diane Hendrickson, 7th year with Tammy and this event; Elizabeth Adams,   volunteer positions: and Chris Bumpass, shoes giveaway and activities.  Wow!  1200 pairs of children's and adult shoes were donated to give away at our event.  A huge thank you to Kelsey Bacon who has recruited  the amazing  UALC Middle Schoolers to inventory the shoes for our event.  
Thank you to Kristi Haugland who is creating the flyer with shoe size and information.  Kristi will get signs made to put around the Linden community to publicize our backpack giveaway.  She is also asking if the Blue Jackets can attend and do activities with the student participants.  
Thank you to our two teacher volunteers Sue Bauchmoyer and Terry Trubiano who figured out the needed school supplies. Sue also is contacting the Safe Streets police officers on bikes and picked up 200 toothbrush kits from KidSmiles. Dr. CeCe Harris arranged  for 200 boxes of food to be given away.  Bonnie Johnston and Officer Alesia Zacher contacted #16 Fire Station to hopefully have a fire truck on display.  Officer Alesia will coordinate traffic and parking.  She also has arranged for the K9 dogs to come.    Diane has asked the North Civitan if they can make snow cones for the participants which was always a welcome treat in previous years.  Music and hopefully frisbees will be provided by 104.9 The River thanks to contact by Terry Starr.  Anne Dukat and Christie Masheter are other members of the Because School Matters 2021 team.

We will need about $5,000 worth of school supplies to put into the 450 backpacks we will give away. We need these donations by July 17 so that we can determine what items need to be purchased. God's Hygiene was so grateful to receive a trunkload of like new teacher supplies which we  will donate to the staff of Huy Elementary in appreciation for letting us use their parking lot.

Dari was so appreciative to receive this Clean Start Basket.  When Tammy was first starting God's Hygiene Help Center, Dari and her mother would send hygiene from Pennsylvania with her sister Dana.  Tammy was grateful to receive shampoo, combs and more items.  Years later Dana Parr now serves on our GHHC Board.
Kathryn is teaching her granddaughter about paying it forward and helping those in need.  Together they go shopping for items to place in a Clean Start Basket.  They love spending time and serving together.
We are grateful to support Kindway/Embark by providing Clean Start Baskets for residents starting their new lives over.  Pictured above is Terry Starr; Jan Roberts, Women Transition Manager; and Tammy Jewell.  Jan came to pick up 3 baskets and also got a tour of our Help Center.

Thank you to UALC member Donna Biehn for again having their Spiritual Care Committee organize a purse and donations drive this month.  Wow!  Chris, our new Resources Manager picked up 120 purses and $525.  Our staff is so grateful to the residents of Friendship Village Dublin.  
Bonnie Johnston has been such a dependable volunteer on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  We appreciate that as an associate of Gideons, she has been offering free Bibles to all the clients.  Bonnie will return to us in September after spending the summer with her husband in their Michigan home.  
​Welcome to 2 new volunteers this month:  Simon Estifanos who is the son of Pedros and Ruth, owners of the property we lease.  He will be a senior at St. Francis DeSales High School  this year. Chris Bumpass shared with her neighbor about serving at God's Hygiene, so Jan  came to try  out being a volunteer in our warehouse helping with  filling orders.  Thank you for helping to pack hygiene items into the purses.  Some of those purses will be given away to 10 selected women from Medina Recovery at an outreach luncheon to be held on August 25 at the Oakland Event Center next door to the Help Center..

A huge THANK YOU to 2 men who live at the Medina Sober House.  They didn't ask for anything, but they did ask if they could help clean up the parking lot.  They had extra time on Saturday, June 12, so they weeded and swept for two hours.  Thank you so much!   Pictured is Travis one of the cleanup men.

During the month of June, we served 276 clients at our Oakland Park Help Center.  Thank you to our supporters who make it possible for us to share hygiene and dignity with those in need.
